The SMSF Statistical Report

27 Oct The SMSF Statistical Report

The ATO Quarterly SMSF Statistical Report.

Earlier this week the ATO released its quarterly self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) statistical report for June 2015.  According to the report, it is estimated there are over 557,000 SMSF’s with total assets of $590 billion. Both the number of funds and their combined assets has increased by approximately 6% in the last 12 months.

As part of the release of the new report, the June 2014 quarter estimates for assets held by SMSF’s under limited recourse borrowing arrangements (LRBA’s) has been revised from $9.3 billion to $15.1 billion.

superThe increase in the ATO estimates is attributed to some growth in the use of LRBAs by SMSFs and the improved data collection through the new LRBA asset labels on the SMSF annual return.

LRBAs allow SMSFs to borrow money to buy a single asset as long as the lender’s recourse is limited to that asset only if the SMSF defaults on the loan.

The ATO estimates SMSF assets held under LRBAs equal approximately $15.6 billion at June 2015, which is less than 3% of total assets held by SMSFs.

The ATO is expected to release the next SMSF statistical report later November 2015. The full report for June 2015 can he found here.
