When we talk about investments inside of an SMSF most of us know the main things you can invest in – Property, Australian shares and managed funds are the most obvious options that trustees discuss when they start their Self-Managed Super Fund.

However there are a number of other options available for investors, as long as you know and understand what you are investing in!

While many investments seem interesting or appealing, like with any type of investment whether held inside or outside your Super, you need to follow the most important investing rule. If you don’t understand the investment DON’T INVEST IN IT.

As a trustee of your SMSF it is important to know about these investments. For this reason I have compiled a list of investment opportunities for SMSFs.

Even though the investments listed below are able to be held inside an SMSF, it is essential to check with one of our SMSF Coaches so you understand the restrictions placed on each of these investment types.

Regardless of the investment type all investments available to SMSFs have certain restrictions placed on them that may not necessarily apply if buying them outside of Super.

What you can buy in Super:

– Residential Property

– Commercial Property

– Industrial Property

– Australian Shares

– International Shares

– Shares in a private company (non-related entity)

– Cash management accounts

– Term deposits

– Property partnerships (non-related entity)

– Options

– Warrants

– CFDs

– Art

– Wine

– Boats

– Other Collectibles

Many of these investments, especially “collectibles” come with extensive restrictions around insurance, storage, use and rent. These investments also tend to act as a red flag to the ATO making it more likely for regular audits to occur.

To learn more about these investments, their benefits and associated risks come along to one our SMSF Information Nights held across Australia.
